A Farewell to Blogging.

At least, farewell for now. Like Brian, I cannot say that I actually enjoy blogging. But, I am glad that I was able to learn the basics of how to do it this semester. It seems as though blogging is the new trend so I’m sure I will be seeing it again in other courses.

As I think about this being my last post for the semester, I admit that I am feeling a bit sentimental. I have just finished my annotated bibliography and I have my customary glass of red “blogging” wine by my side. It is hard to believe the sememster is over already. Yet, sometimes it feels as though the path to obtaining my degree may never end. I know I must keep chugging along and most importantly, enjoy learning (no matter what curveball i.e. Sir Walker Percy is thrown at me). I am greatful for the opportunity I had this semester to meet all of you guys and girls in ENG202. Tom, as quiet as you were in class, your blogs never failed to crack me up! Ashley, you’re doing a great job, it’s not easy trying to find a balance between school, work and life but you’re doing a great job. Shanika, I really hope “Santa” leaves you a microscope for Christmas this year. Jay, where have you been? Greg, thanks for all the revisional help on my roughdrafts. I hope to see you in a couple of weeks in Chatanooga, Tn. GO SPIDERS!!! Debbie, you are such a hard worker and a wonderful mother. I’m having a case of wine delivered to your house this weekend to help you get through your first sleepover:) Sandy and Brian, you guys are great. I look foward to next semester. And of course, Happy. This semester, you truly challenged me in a pull my hair out kind of way:) It has been a while since I have had to really look outside the box. You helped to awaken that part of my brain that I forgot existed, Thank you. Walker Percy, I did not particularly care for your writing in September and I do not particularly care for your writing now. Yet, it stays with me..

Well, I’ve just sent off another rough draft to Happy. I’m not sure why I keep torturing myself with this paper. I don’t have too much time left now to make corrections and I’m sure she will send it back with plenty. On the bright side, at least my blog didn’t make it onto msnbc’s lamest blog list. Thanks for that link, Tom, it was pretty funny. I hope everyone had a great Thanksgiving. Mine was great. My mom flew down from Boston. She was here until Monday and she even got to experience her first college football game. GO SPIDERS!!! It was a great game for her to see. Friday, we are headed to Boone, N.C. to play Appalachian State. My husband has been watching last year’s game DVD every night. I’m not sure if he’s planning to coach in the game or if he’s going to try and suit up. We’ll see. See you all tomorrow night.

I know I in class last week I signed up to bring peanut butter blossom cookies a.k.a peanut butter cookies with a hershey kiss on top but would anybody object if I brought in triple chocolate cookies instead? Part of our fall fundraiser at school was cookie dough. The order came in this week and we had some extra boxes. They look really good. Let me know if you guys had your hearts set on peanut blossoms and I will stick with those. Otherwise it’s triple chocolate!

I’ve been sitting here at my desk for the past two hours trying to formulate a rough draft that makes sense. I’ve already deleted one draft I had because I just wasn’t feeling it. I haven’t sent any drafts along to Happy yet because I keep deleting them rather than crowd her inbox with writing that I’m not really comfortable with yet. Luckily, I have the next two days off from work to finish up this draft along with finishing up assignments for my other classes. My goal is to have ninety percent of my final assignments complete by Thanksgiving. Hopefully no one else has had to delete as much as I have this past week.

The end of October

I cannot believe we are already at the end of October. Where did this month go??? We had a whirlwind weekend-my husband’s sister and her family came down from Mass. for a visit so my weekend consisted of showing them the sights of Richmond-Cary Street anyway. Then taking them over to the stadium to watch the UR v. Georgetown game. Not so easy since my son was exhausted from trying to keep up with his big cousins and the baby doesn’t care for strangers so she wanted nothing to do with any of them. One the plus side, my arms got a great workout from lugging around twenty three pounds of baby girl in one arm and the stupid nebulizer in the other. Now my daughter has some sort of “virus” and her temp. keeps spiking up and down. Needless to say, next on my list is “No Name Woman” and a nice glass of red wine.

We send out a Halloween card every year. This year, the kids were skeletons.
It took me quite some time to get them to sit togther without acting like nuts long enough to snap

Argument Essay

Well, I can happily say writing this essay has been much more enjoyable than the first essay. I really liked the piece by Annie Dillard and can relate well to it. I too have not posted prior to this evening this week. Like Brian, I spent my Sunday evening with Karl Marx and Adam Smith. I am looking foward to meeting in groups tomorrow night in class to discuss our essays. I haven’t sent a draft to Happy yet, I figured I would wait and do so after class. What a great day this we had today. My husband and I both took the day off from work (not an easy feat for a football coach) and took the kids up to Carter Mountain Orchard for a day of apple picking. The weather was beautiful and our son had a blast up on Daddy’s shoulders picking apples. He was so proud of himself when he reached one and dropped it into the bag. He couldn’t wait to get home and bake an apple pie and host a “pie party” for all the neighbors. Ava was content to sit in her stroller and munch on as many apples as she could get her hands on. She was funny trying to walk with all the apples on the ground. She kept rolling around trying to get her footing and laughing the whole time. At one point I thought about the Dillard essay and couldn’t imagine myself at this point in our lives not wanting to check out all the things my children find so fascinating. Everything is so new and undefined for them. It’s hard not to share their enthusiasm sometimes.
On a lighter note, I only had time to get the pie started with my son before I had to head off to class. I left the my husband in charge of putting on the top crust and baking the pie. Needless to say when I got home, the finished pie was waiting on the counter when I came home. The crust had been neatly folded around the lip of the pie plate the whole way around and baked. A noble attempt, I must admit- and the crust tastes just as good once you finagle it off the plate!

“An American Childhood”

I enjoyed the excerpt from Annie Dillard’s “An American Childhood” for a few different reasons. The first reason was her enthusiasm and eagerness to learn from the microscope. Even if I had no interest in what she was studying, I couldn’t help enjoy reading about it because of they way she expressed her enthusiasm. Secondly, I could relate a bit to the role her parents chose to play in her development. Growing up, I was the only child of my parent’s marriage (a second marriage for both) and I was the youngest child by eight years. Like Dillard’s parents, they supported my various endeavors and supplied me with whatever it was I needed, they were not what I refer to as “driving parents”. By “driving parents” I mean they were never the parents to drive or pick up my friends from various events or activities, nor were they sideline/bleacher parents at my different sporting events or school activities. They cared about what I was doing, but they were not their holding my hand through everything. While I would not describe my parents lack of involvement to be quite as disengaged (perhaps not the right word), as Dillards, but they certainly allowed me to foster my own strong sense of independence and enabled me to learn from my (many) mistakes and experiences.
I did a bit of background reading on Dillard and I found a few more similarities. Her parents instilled in her the ability to have a sense of humor, mine did as well. And while my parents were not in attendance at school events, they did instill in me many other useful traits and skills.
I also read that Dillard was very much into Emerson and Thoreau. That caught my eye because I began to think back to “Walden Pond” and then, who do you think began running through my mind? PERCY!!!
